Overview
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs one of the highest-volume thoracic surgical services in the NHS: its own service page describes it as one of the largest and busiest specialist thoracic units in the country, and the National Lung Cancer Audit's 2026 data tables record 568 lung cancer resections there in 2024, the third highest of the 28 units in England and Wales. It delivered the UK Lung Cancer Screening trial with Papworth, hosts the Cheshire and Merseyside lung cancer screening programme sites used by the APPLIED-LUNG and P4-LHC studies, and works with the University of Liverpool's lung cancer research programme.
