The Liverpool scientist behind the UK Lung Cancer Screening trial and the Liverpool Lung Project risk model, which is one of the two rules the NHS uses to decide who is invited for a scan.
John Field holds a personal clinical chair in molecular oncology at the University of Liverpool and is Director of Research of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Research Programme. He was chief investigator of the UK Lung Cancer Screening trial, which approached 247,354 people, randomised 4,055 and found 42 cancers, 85.7 percent of them at stage 1 or 2; its 2021 mortality paper reported 30 lung cancer deaths in the screened arm against 46 in the control arm, a relative rate of 0.65 that did not reach significance on its own, and pooled it with eight other trials for a relative rate of 0.84.
His Liverpool Lung Project risk model, in its second version, is one of the two risk rules used to decide eligibility in UK lung health checks, alongside PLCOm2012. He chaired the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer's screening, prevention and early detection committee, founded its strategic screening advisory group, and received the association's Joseph Cullen Award in 2011 for lifetime achievement in lung cancer prevention research. He remains a principal investigator on live work, including a home urine collection study inside the Liverpool lung health check.
