The Nottingham chest physician who chairs the UK clinical expert group for lung cancer and advises the National Screening Committee: the person whose job it is to turn the screening evidence into an NHS service.
David Baldwin is a consultant respiratory physician at Nottingham University Hospitals and an honorary professor of medicine at the University of Nottingham, sub-specialising in lung cancer, mesothelioma and interventional procedures. His public page lists him as Lead Clinician for Lung Cancer at NHS England, chair of the UK Clinical Expert Group for Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma, and an adviser to the UK National Screening Committee at the Department of Health and Social Care, with research grants totalling more than 35 million pounds and more than 240 papers.
He was the lead respiratory physician on the UK Lung Cancer Screening trial and leads the recruitment work package of the European 4-in-the-Lung-Run project. He has previously been honorary secretary of the British Thoracic Society, clinical lead on the NICE lung cancer guideline development group, chair of the lung cancer quality standards group, clinical director of the East Midlands Cancer Alliance and chair of the National Cancer Research Institute's screening, prevention and early diagnosis group. The Clinical Expert Group he chairs wrote the commissioning guidance for the whole lung cancer pathway that the National Lung Cancer Audit cites.
