The Leeds respiratory physician who ran the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial, the trial that worked out which risk rule the NHS should use to decide who gets a screening scan.
Matthew Callister is a consultant in respiratory medicine at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where his listed special interests are general respiratory medicine, lung cancer, mesothelioma and endobronchial ultrasound, and an honorary professor at the University of Leeds. He is the named scientific contact on the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial and senior author on its main results.
The trial, funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research and run from mobile CT vans in the community, invited 44,943 people and enrolled 8,847. Its participation paper showed response falling with current smoking and with deprivation, which is the central problem of lung screening. Its eligibility paper compared the three rules the programme might use and found that the PLCOm2012 risk model at a threshold of 1.51 percent identified 91.1 percent of the cancers, against 62.8 percent for the 2013 United States Preventive Services Task Force criteria. Its cost-effectiveness paper put every option well below the 20,000 pound per quality-adjusted life-year threshold. He is also the scientific contact on YorQuit, which is testing which stop-smoking offer works best alongside screening.
