National Institute of Oncology, Hungary
Hungary's national cancer institute, home to the national cancer registry and a leading breast brachytherapy programme.
The National Institute of Oncology in Budapest, founded in 1936, is Hungary's national cancer hospital and research institute and the seat of the Hungarian National Cancer Registry. Under Csaba Polgár, a radiation oncologist known for accelerated partial breast irradiation and the GEC-ESTRO breast brachytherapy trials, the institute coordinates the national cancer control programme and the National Tumour Biology Laboratory. It provides surgical, medical and radiation oncology, haematology, nuclear medicine and pathology for the whole country, hosts a molecular tumour board and an increasing number of international trials, and is OECI-accredited. It collaborates closely with Semmelweis University and the Central and Eastern European oncology groups.
