Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology
Poland's national cancer institute, founded on Marie Curie's initiative in 1932, with branches in Gliwice and Kraków and the national cancer registry.
The Radium Institute opened in Warsaw in 1932 at the initiative of Maria Skłodowska-Curie, who donated a gram of radium, and today the National Research Institute of Oncology is Poland's largest cancer centre and national reference institution, with branches in Gliwice and Kraków. It hosts the Polish National Cancer Registry, coordinates the national cancer strategy and cooperative trials, and its Kraków branch treats patients with protons at the Bronowice Cyclotron Centre. Piotr Rutkowski's sarcoma and melanoma department is a European reference and contributes to ESMO guidelines, and the institute has large radiotherapy, brachytherapy, surgical and haematology departments. It runs early-phase trials and the national precision oncology programme.
