Polish surgical oncologist who led the pooled EORTC and SWOG trials showing that imatinib shrinks dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, a rare skin sarcoma driven by a PDGFB fusion.
Overview
Piotr Rutkowski heads the department of soft tissue and bone sarcoma and melanoma at the National Research Institute of Oncology in Warsaw. He was first author of the 2010 Journal of Clinical Oncology report pooling the EORTC and SWOG phase 2 trials of imatinib in locally advanced or metastatic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, which established the drug for unresectable disease. He is a leading investigator in European melanoma and GIST trials.
