Sylvie Bonvalot
Paris surgeon who championed compartmental resection for retroperitoneal sarcoma and led STRASS, the trial that showed preoperative radiotherapy does not improve abdominal recurrence-free survival overall.
Overview
Sylvie Bonvalot is a sarcoma surgeon at Institut Curie in Paris. She was first author of the 2009 Journal of Clinical Oncology study showing that systematic en bloc resection of adjacent organs reduced local recurrence in primary retroperitoneal sarcoma, and of the 2020 Lancet Oncology report of the EORTC STRASS trial, in which preoperative radiotherapy did not significantly improve abdominal recurrence-free survival compared with surgery alone, though a possible benefit in liposarcoma remains under study.
Surgery alone in a reference centre is the standard for primary retroperitoneal sarcoma; preoperative radiotherapy is considered case by case in liposarcoma.
Extended en bloc resection in a sarcoma reference centre is the standard operation for retroperitoneal sarcoma.
