A Liverpool charity that funds cancer research and education aimed at the cancers that matter most in the North West of England and North Wales.
North West Cancer Research began in 1948 as the Friends of the Liverpool Radium Institute and took the name North West Cancer Research Fund in 1964; its story page records early gifts for a chromosome research unit and an endocrine research institute, and £60,000 for a linear accelerator at the newly built Clatterbridge Hospital. From 2000 it founded the North West Cancer Research Institute in Bangor, and in 2012 it merged with another local charity, Clatterbridge Cancer Research. The register says most of its research takes place in three centres at the University of Liverpool, Lancaster University and the University of Wales in Bangor. It also runs education, prevention and school programmes, citing a 25% higher cancer diagnosis rate in the region. The Charity Commission register records latest income of about £2.3 million for the year ending 30 September 2025.
