Where John Byrd's team turned ibrutinib into the drug that transformed chronic lymphocytic leukaemia; Ohio State's NCI comprehensive centre.
NCI-designated since 1976, the OSUCCC – James is one of the few free-standing cancer hospitals in the US and Ohio's largest cancer research enterprise. John Byrd and colleagues ran the defining early and phase 3 trials of ibrutinib (RESONATE) and acalabrutinib in CLL, and Clara Bloomfield's cytogenetic and molecular classification of acute myeloid leukaemia underpins today's ELN risk groups. Carlo Croce discovered the role of microRNAs in cancer and mapped BCL2 to the t(14;18) translocation in follicular lymphoma. Former director Michael Caligiuri built its NK cell and immunology programme, and Raphael Pollock leads a national sarcoma programme. Pelotonia, an annual cycling event, funds much of the centre's research.
