Cancer Institute of Iran, Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex
Iran's oldest and largest cancer centre, founded in 1955 within Tehran's Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex, and the country's main oncology training and research hub.
The Cancer Institute of Iran was established in 1955 as part of the Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and is the largest cancer hospital in Iran, offering surgical, medical and radiation oncology, breast and gastrointestinal cancer surgery, nuclear medicine and a Cancer Research Center that runs the Tehran cancer registry and epidemiological studies. TUMS investigators contribute to the Golestan Cohort Study of oesophageal cancer in north-eastern Iran, one of the most important cohorts in the Middle East and a long-running collaboration with IARC and the US National Cancer Institute, and to research on gastric cancer, breast cancer in younger women and the effects of sanctions on drug access. The institute trains most of Iran's oncology specialists.
