Radiobiologist who discovered the FLASH effect: ultra-fast radiation spares healthy tissue while still killing tumours.
Overview
Marie-Catherine Vozenin led the 2014 study showing that radiation delivered at ultra-high dose rates (over 40 Gy per second) spares normal lung tissue in mice while retaining anti-tumour efficacy, the FLASH effect, and went on to confirm it in mini-pigs, cats and the first human patient with Jean Bourhis. Her work launched a global effort to build FLASH-capable machines and understand the underlying biology.
