The oncologist who led COIN, which showed that adding cetuximab to first-line chemotherapy did not extend life even in RAS wild-type bowel cancer, and who ran the UK's molecularly stratified platform trial.
Tim Maughan was appointed Professor of Clinical Oncology and clinical director of the Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology in the University of Oxford's Department of Oncology in 2011, and before that was an NHS consultant clinical oncologist in Cardiff, becoming Professor of Cancer Studies in 2007. He was first author of MRC COIN, which found no overall survival gain from adding cetuximab to oxaliplatin-based first-line chemotherapy even in KRAS wild-type disease, and is the senior author of the account of ten years of running FOCUS4, the adaptive platform trial that split metastatic colorectal cancer by molecular group and whose FOCUS4-N arm legitimised chemotherapy breaks.
