A small battery drill that drives the bone marrow biopsy needle into the hip bone, instead of the doctor twisting it in by hand, used to diagnose and check leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Powered drivers are cleared as biopsy instruments (FDA product code KNW). Vidacare's OnControl bone marrow biopsy system (K142377, 17 December 2014) is intended "for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy in adult and pediatric patients age 2 and older"; that clearance expanded its use to children. Bard's BD Trek powered bone biopsy system (K213896, 30 March 2022) and Laurane Medical's OmniBone kits with power driver (K230015, 16 June 2023) followed. A battery-powered rotary driver advances a trephine needle through the cortex of the iliac crest at controlled speed, then a core is cut and withdrawn for histology alongside an aspirate.
