Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is an eight-herb Chinese formula for fatigue and weakness, commonly prescribed to people with lung cancer in Taiwan. Small studies suggest less fatigue, better quality of life and less weight loss in cancer, but large well-designed trials have not been done. Nausea and bloating have been reported.
Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is a traditional Chinese formula documented in a 13th-century treatise and made of eight herbs: citrus peel, dang gui, liquorice, astragalus, black cohosh rhizome (Cimicifuga foetida), atractylodes, bupleurum and Asian ginseng. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs summary reports small studies in cancer suggesting reduced fatigue, improved immune function and quality of life, reduced cachexia and increased muscle mass, and notes that it is among the formulas commonly prescribed for lung cancer patients in Taiwan. It has also been studied in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and wound healing. MSK states large, well-designed trials are needed. Nausea and bloating were reported in clinical studies, and MSK lists no known herb-drug interactions, though the formula contains liquorice and ginseng, which have their own interaction profiles.
A multi-herb tonic; its astragalus and ginseng components have immune and anti-fatigue effects in laboratory models.
