Hepatitis B and C as cancer causes

Two viruses cause most liver cancer worldwide. One is preventable by vaccine, the other curable with pills, which makes liver cancer one of the most preventable cancers.

HBV (integration and chronic inflammation) and HCV (chronic inflammation, cirrhosis) account for the majority of HCC globally. Universal HBV vaccination in Taiwan cut childhood HCC incidence by ~70%; direct-acting antivirals cure HCV in >95% and reduce HCC risk by roughly 70%, though risk persists in established cirrhosis. MASLD is now the fastest-growing cause in Western countries.
