ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research
ICMR's cancer prevention institute near Delhi, focused on the cancers India can prevent: cervical cancer through HPV screening and vaccination, and oral cancer through tobacco control.
Overview
The institute began as the Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology and was renamed the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research; it sits in Noida on the edge of Delhi and, in ICMR's words, conducts basic, clinical and applied research on the common cancers prevalent in India. Its work centres on cervical cancer screening (cytology and HPV testing), HPV vaccination studies, oral cancer and smokeless tobacco, including a WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control knowledge hub on smokeless tobacco, and training of health workers for the national screening programme for oral, breast and cervical cancer.
