McGill's cancer research institute, heir to the discovery of CEA, the first tumour marker, and a leader in metastasis, metabolism and mouse models of breast cancer.
Founded in 1978 as the McGill Cancer Centre, the Goodman Cancer Institute builds on Phil Gold and Samuel Freedman's 1965 discovery at McGill of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), the first clinically used tumour marker and today the target of CEACAM5 antibody-drug conjugates. William Muller's MMTV-driven mouse models of HER2/Neu breast cancer are used worldwide; Morag Park and Peter Siegel study the breast tumour microenvironment and metastasis; Nahum Sonenberg's work on mRNA translation control (eIF4E) opened a therapeutic axis; and metabolism researchers including Julie St-Pierre link mitochondrial biology to tumour progression. The institute partners with McGill's teaching hospitals, the Jewish General Hospital's Segal Cancer Centre and the McGill University Health Centre, for translation.
