The Swedish academy that, with the Sjöberg Foundation, awards the yearly Sjöberg Prize in cancer research: one million US dollars, most of it for the laureate's further research.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, whose secretariat is in the Frescati area of Stockholm, awards several prizes; its prizes page lists the Nobel Prizes, the Prize in Economic Sciences, the Crafoord Prize and the Sjöberg Prize among them. The Sjöberg Prize is the one about cancer. It is awarded with the Sjöberg Foundation, which finances it and was founded in 2016 by the businessman Bengt Sjöberg after a doctor found tumours in his lungs; in May 2016 he announced a donation of two billion Swedish kronor to the foundation, and he died on 17 January 2017.
The first laureates were announced on 14 February 2017, and the prize has been given each year since to one or more people who have made decisive contributions to cancer research. It is worth the equivalent of one million US dollars: 100,000 dollars as a personal prize and 900,000 dollars that must be used for continued cancer research. Nominees should be under 60. The Academy decides the award and the foundation's board confirms it; laureates are usually announced in February and the prize is given at the Academy's Annual Meeting in late March. James P. Allison was one of the two first laureates in 2017; Charles Swanton of the Francis Crick Institute was awarded the 2026 prize for work on how tumours evolve, including the TRACERx study.
Discovered that blocking CTLA-4 unleashes T cells against cancer, the work behind ipilimumab and the 2018 Nobel Prize.
Leads TRACERx, the study that follows lung cancers as they evolve, and showed how air pollution can trigger lung cancer without new mutations.
