The Gates Foundation has committed $4.1 billion to Gavi, the vaccine alliance it helped found in 2000, whose HPV programme had fully immunised nearly 60 million girls against cervical cancer by the end of 2024.

Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates founded the Gates Foundation, which Gavi records as a founding partner with total commitments of US$4.1 billion to date: a US$750 million commitment to the Vaccine Fund in 2000, more than US$1 billion over 2011-2015, US$1.55 billion for 2016-2020 and US$1.6 billion for the 2021-2025 strategic period. Gavi's HPV vaccine programme, which began in 2014, is the route by which most girls in the world's poorest countries are protected against the virus that causes cervical cancer: by the end of 2024, 42 countries had launched national HPV programmes with Gavi support, fully immunising more than 59.8 million girls, with a target of over 86 million girls by the end of 2025 and more than 1.4 million future cervical cancer deaths averted; in December 2022 the Gavi Board approved a revitalisation of the programme with more than US$600 million through 2025 after the WHO endorsed single-dose schedules. Cervical cancer is the first cancer the world has a credible plan to eliminate, and this money is much of the plan.
