Under his chairmanship Tata Trusts launched a cancer care programme in 2017 to bring affordable treatment closer to home: 20 hospitals across seven states and, with the Assam government, a three-level network of 19 cancer facilities across the north-east.
Overview
Ratan Tata (1937-2024) chaired Tata Sons for two decades and Tata Trusts until his death, and made cancer the Trusts' largest healthcare commitment. Tata Trusts records that its Cancer Care Programme was introduced in 2017 with a vision to transform cancer care in India by making affordable, high-quality care available closer to patients' homes, through a distributed model built on access, quality, affordability, and awareness, early detection and palliative care. The Trusts are building a network of 20 hospitals across Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat. The Assam Cancer Care Foundation, established in 2017 in partnership with the Government of Assam, created a three-level network of two apex research centres, twelve district-level treatment facilities and five day-care centres serving the whole north-east. The programme's stated aim is to reverse India's 30:70 ratio of early to late detection. The Tata Medical Center in Kolkata, opened in 2012, serves eastern India.
