Gates Foundation

aka Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, BMGF

The world's largest private foundation; its cancer work focuses on HPV vaccination and cervical cancer elimination in low- and middle-income countries.

Founded in 2000, the Gates Foundation funds global health, development and US education. Cancer is not a core programme, but the foundation is a major force behind the WHO cervical cancer elimination strategy: it co-founded Gavi, which finances HPV vaccination in low-income countries, funded the trials and modelling behind single-dose HPV vaccination, and supports screening and treatment access work in Africa and South Asia. It also funds low-cost diagnostics, hepatitis B vaccination that prevents liver cancer, and data and modelling through the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Its scale means its choices shape which cancer problems in poorer countries get attention.
