L. S. Shashidhara

L. S. Shashidhara is Centre Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bengaluru, a unit of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research that conducts research across biological scales and increasingly combines experiment with computational approaches. His research concerns the gene regulatory mechanisms that position cells, tissues and organs during development, with applications to cancer research. He studied genetics and plant breeding at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, took his PhD at the University of Cambridge and did postdoctoral work there on Hox protein function in Drosophila. He was a founding academic member of IISER Pune and Ashoka University, is a former Vice-President of the Indian National Science Academy, is President of the International Union of Biological Sciences, and has received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and a J. C. Bose National Fellowship.
