Nubia Muñoz
Colombian epidemiologist whose IARC studies proved HPV causes cervical cancer and identified the types the vaccines target.
Overview
Nubia Muñoz led the IARC multicentre case-control studies across four continents that established human papillomavirus as the necessary cause of cervical cancer and the 2003 classification of high-risk HPV types that determined which types the prophylactic vaccines should cover. She was a principal investigator in the Costa Rica and quadrivalent vaccine trials and received the Gairdner Global Health Award.
