Rajesh Sudhir Gokhale leads the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) as Secretary to the Government of India; DBT, part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, funds biotechnology research and institutions across India. He is a chemical biologist whose work has focused on the metabolic diversity of pathogens, including the discovery of a family of long chain fatty acyl AMP ligases in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. He was Director of the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology from 2009 to 2016, is a professor of biology at IISER Pune, and received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 2006.
