CellSeed Inc., founded in 2001 in Tokyo and listed there, commercialises cell sheet engineering from Tokyo Women's Medical University: sheets of a patient's own cells grown on temperature-responsive culture surfaces and lifted off intact. Its oesophageal epithelial cell sheets are applied to the ulcer left after endoscopic submucosal dissection of early oesophageal cancer to prevent stricture, and the company leads the Japanese phase 3 trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.
