German Cancer Consortium (DKTK)
Germany's national translational cancer research network: the DKFZ in Heidelberg as core centre plus university hospitals and institutes at seven other sites, so that laboratory findings reach patients across the country rather than in one city.
Overview
The German Cancer Consortium (Deutsches Konsortium für Translationale Krebsforschung, DKTK) is one of the German Centres for Health Research funded by the federal and state governments. Its own site describes more than twenty institutions and teaching hospitals joined in translational research centres at eight locations: Heidelberg as the core centre at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), with partner sites in Berlin (Charité), Dresden (TU Dresden, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf), Essen and Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Mainz (including the Georg-Speyer-Haus), Freiburg (including the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics), Munich (LMU and TUM with their university hospitals) and Tübingen. The consortium runs joint research programmes and shared platforms, among them the NCT/DKTK MASTER programme that sequences the genomes of rare and young-adult cancers to guide treatment, run from Heidelberg by Stefan Fröhling.
