National Cancer Registry Programme (ICMR-NINE, Bengaluru)
The programme that counts cancer in India: population and hospital registries whose reports give the country its official estimates of new cases, leading cancers and stage at diagnosis.
Overview
The ICMR National Cancer Registry Programme has run since 1982, coordinated from Bengaluru by what was the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research and is now the ICMR-National Institute of Noncommunicable Disease Epidemiology (ICMR-NINE). Its 2020 report drew on 28 population-based and 58 hospital-based registries covering 2012-2016 (667,666 cases) and projected 1,392,179 new cancers for 2020, with breast, lung, mouth, cervix and tongue the five leading sites; a 2022 update estimated 1,461,427 cases (crude rate 100.4 per 100,000) and a 12.8% rise by 2025, and put lifetime risk at about one in nine.
The registries also show where India is different: most breast (57%), cervical (60%) and head and neck (66.6%) cancers present at a locally advanced stage, the north-east has the highest incidence rates in the country, and tobacco-related cancers dominate in men. These numbers drive the National Cancer Grid's priorities and the screening and tobacco-control programmes.
