Institut Jules Bordet

aka Jules Bordet Institute, Bordet, Hôpital Universitaire de Bruxelles

Belgium's only hospital devoted entirely to cancer, birthplace of the Breast International Group and a world centre for breast cancer trials.

The Institut Jules Bordet opened in 1939, named after the Nobel laureate immunologist Jules Bordet, and moved to a new building beside Erasme Hospital in Anderlecht in 2021 as part of the Hôpital Universitaire de Bruxelles. It is OECI-accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre. Martine Piccart co-founded the Breast International Group here and led the HERA trial of adjuvant trastuzumab; Christos Sotiriou's laboratory developed gene expression signatures for breast cancer and Michail Ignatiadis leads circulating tumour DNA studies, while Ahmad Awada's early-phase unit tests new agents. Bordet is also strong in haematology, nuclear medicine and surgical oncology, and Brussels hosts both BIG and EORTC headquarters.
