Society of Surgical Oncology

aka SSO, James Ewing Society

The international society of cancer surgeons, publisher of Annals of Surgical Oncology and co-author of the margin and de-escalation guidelines that changed breast and melanoma surgery.

Founded in 1940 as the James Ewing Society, the SSO represents surgical oncologists worldwide, publishes Annals of Surgical Oncology and runs the annual SSO International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care. Its joint SSO-ASTRO consensus on breast-conserving surgery margins ('no ink on tumour') reduced re-excisions, and its guidelines with ASCO on sentinel node biopsy and melanoma surgery translated MSLT-II into practice. SSO accredits complex general surgical oncology fellowships and its Breast Surgical Oncology and Complex General Surgical Oncology training programmes, and it partners with ESSO and the Asian and Latin American societies on global surgical oncology.
