Validation of a 12-gene score for ductal carcinoma in situ, which separated women by their chance of the disease returning in the same breast after surgery without radiotherapy.
In 327 patients from the ECOG E5194 study treated by excision alone, the DCIS score (seven cancer-related and five reference genes, measured with the Oncotype DX assay) was associated with ipsilateral breast events; ten-year risks were 10.6, 26.7 and 25.9 per cent for low, intermediate and high scores.
A gene-activity score can tell some women with DCIS that their chance of recurrence after surgery alone is lower.
