David Dearnaley
British radiation oncologist who led CHHiP, the trial that showed prostate cancer can be treated in 20 radiotherapy sessions rather than 37 with the same results, changing practice worldwide.
Overview
David Dearnaley led prostate radiotherapy research at The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden for three decades. He was first author of the 2016 Lancet Oncology report of CHHiP, the UK trial in which 60 Gy in 20 fractions was non-inferior to 74 Gy in 37 fractions for localised prostate cancer, making moderate hypofractionation the standard. His earlier trials established dose escalation with conformal radiotherapy.
