Neurosurgeon who proved that removing more of a glioma extends survival and pioneered awake mapping to do it safely.
Overview
Mitchel Berger led the studies establishing that extent of resection independently predicts survival in low-grade and high-grade glioma, which shifted neurosurgical practice toward maximal safe resection, and developed intraoperative brain mapping techniques that make aggressive surgery near language and motor areas possible. He directed the UCSF Brain Tumor Center and has been president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
