photonamic is the small German company behind Gliolan (Gleolan), the drink of 5-aminolevulinic acid that makes glioma tissue glow pink under a surgical microscope so neurosurgeons can remove more of the tumour.
Overview
photonamic GmbH & Co. KG, founded in 2002 in Wedel near Hamburg, developed oral 5-aminolevulinic acid (Gliolan in Europe, Gleolan in the United States) for fluorescence-guided resection of high-grade glioma. Malignant glioma cells convert the drug into fluorescent protoporphyrin IX, and the randomised trial that led to European approval in 2007 showed more complete resections and longer progression-free survival; FDA approval followed in 2017 through its partner NX Development Corp. It leads phase 3 trials extending the approach, registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.
