Rob Pieters
Dutch paediatric oncologist who led the international Interfant trials for babies with leukaemia and helped create the Princess Máxima Center, which brought all Dutch childhood cancer care into one hospital.
Overview
Rob Pieters is a paediatric oncologist and the founding chief medical officer of the Princess Máxima Center in Utrecht, which since 2018 has treated all children with cancer in the Netherlands. He chaired the Interfant-99 and Interfant-06 international trials for infants with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and was first author of their reports in the Lancet (2007) and Journal of Clinical Oncology (2019), which defined the standard hybrid chemotherapy for this high-risk group and showed that early intensification did not improve outcomes.
Interfant-06 is the backbone and control benchmark for infant ALL; the successor Interfant-21 adds blinatumomab after this trial showed chemotherapy intensification had reached its limit.
Interfant-99 defined the risk groups and backbone used in Interfant-06 and Interfant-21.
