Francesco Lo-Coco
Italian haematologist who led APL0406, the trial that showed acute promyelocytic leukaemia can be cured with all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide alone, without chemotherapy.
Overview
Francesco Lo-Coco was professor of haematology at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and a leading investigator of the Italian GIMEMA group. He was first author of the 2013 New England Journal of Medicine report of APL0406, the Italian-German trial that showed all-trans retinoic acid plus arsenic trioxide was at least as effective as ATRA plus chemotherapy in low- and intermediate-risk acute promyelocytic leukaemia, with far fewer haematological complications. The chemotherapy-free regimen became the standard of care. He died in 2019.
