Duke surgeon who led COMET, the trial testing whether women with low-risk DCIS can safely be monitored instead of having surgery straight away.
Overview
Shelley Hwang is a breast surgeon at Duke Cancer Institute whose research asks whether ductal carcinoma in situ is overtreated. She led the COMET trial, which randomised women with low-risk DCIS to guideline-concordant care or active monitoring with endocrine therapy, and was first author of its 2024 JAMA report showing that the rate of invasive cancer at two years was not worse with monitoring. She also leads laboratory work on the biology of DCIS progression.
