José Baselga
Spanish oncologist who helped develop trastuzumab, pertuzumab and everolimus for breast cancer, and was lead author of BOLERO-2, which established everolimus plus exemestane for hormone-receptor-positive disease.
Overview
José Baselga was a leading figure in breast cancer drug development. He founded the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, served as physician-in-chief at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and later led oncology research and development at AstraZeneca. He was first author of the 2012 New England Journal of Medicine report of BOLERO-2, which showed that adding everolimus to exemestane lengthened progression-free survival in hormone-receptor-positive advanced breast cancer after non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors, and of the CLEOPATRA trial of pertuzumab. He died in 2021.
