Cancer of the voice box is staged separately for its three parts (above, at and below the vocal cords), using how many areas are involved and whether the vocal cords still move.
AJCC chapter 13 covers the larynx and is an 8th edition chapter in the AJCC 2026 table. In the NCI's summary, stage 0 is abnormal cells in the lining; stages I to III are described separately for the supraglottis, glottis and subglottis, with stage III including cancer confined to the larynx with vocal cords that do not move, or spread into the inner thyroid cartilage; stage IVC is spread to other parts of the body such as lungs, liver or bone. The stage descriptions are those in the National Cancer Institute's PDQ summary, which follows the AJCC tables.
Site decides cause and behaviour: HPV drives oropharyngeal cancer, EBV drives nasopharyngeal cancer, tobacco drives oral and laryngeal cancer; all drain into the neck node levels that surgeons and radiotherapists map.
