NHS Genomic Medicine Service

The NHS Genomic Medicine Service brings cancer genomic testing under one national structure. The National Genomic Test Directory, updated each year, states which tests the NHS funds for which indication, from single-gene companion tests to large panels, whole genome sequencing for some cancers, and germline testing where family history or tumour features meet the criteria. Regional Genomic Laboratory Hubs run the tests; clinical teams order them and there is no charge to the patient. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own genomic services with similar principles. For a patient, the practical questions are whether the directory lists a test for their situation and whether the team has requested it.
