The legacy US surgical adjuvant trials group that proved lumpectomy equals mastectomy, tamoxifen prevents breast cancer and trastuzumab cures more HER2-positive disease.
Overview
Founded in 1958 and led for decades by Bernard Fisher, the NSABP ran the trials that rewrote breast cancer surgery and adjuvant therapy: B-04 and B-06 showed breast conservation equals mastectomy, B-14 and B-20 provided the samples that validated the Oncotype DX recurrence score, P-1 showed tamoxifen prevents breast cancer, B-31 (with NCCTG N9831) established adjuvant trastuzumab, and B-32 validated sentinel node biopsy. It also ran colorectal adjuvant trials (C-series). NSABP merged with RTOG and GOG into NRG Oncology in 2014; the NSABP Foundation continues industry-partnered trials such as KATHERINE (with the German Breast Group) and the neoadjuvant B-series.
