Japan's second national cooperative group, born in thoracic oncology; its WJTOG3405 trial helped establish EGFR inhibitors as first-line lung cancer therapy.
Overview
Founded in 2000 as the West Japan Thoracic Oncology Group and renamed WJOG in 2008 as it expanded into gastrointestinal, breast and other cancers. WJTOG3405 (gefitinib versus cisplatin-docetaxel in EGFR-mutant NSCLC) was one of the two Japanese phase 3 trials that made EGFR testing and first-line targeted therapy the standard worldwide. WJOG runs investigator-initiated trials of targeted agents, immunotherapy and chemotherapy across Japan's university and cancer centre hospitals and collaborates with JCOG and with Asian and Western groups. Its committees cover thoracic, gastrointestinal, breast, gynaecologic and genitourinary cancers.
