INEN was founded in Lima in 1939 as the Instituto Nacional del Cáncer and is Peru's national cancer institute and its largest oncology hospital, treating patients from across the country and coordinating the Plan Esperanza national cancer plan, the Lima metropolitan cancer registry and the network of regional cancer institutes in Trujillo, Arequipa and Concepción. It provides surgical, medical, radiation and paediatric oncology, nuclear medicine and bone marrow transplant, and its research department leads Latin American work on gastric cancer (Peru has among the region's highest rates), cervical cancer screening and HPV self-sampling, paediatric leukaemia outcomes, and clinical trials in breast and lung cancer, and it trains most Peruvian oncologists.
