Royal Adelaide Hospital
South Australia's principal hospital, with a major cancer centre and the site of Australia's first proton therapy project at the Australian Bragg Centre.
The Royal Adelaide Hospital, founded in 1840 and rebuilt on a new North Terrace site in 2017, is South Australia's largest hospital and the state's main cancer referral centre, with comprehensive surgical, medical and radiation oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplant, and a phase 1 unit run with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). The adjacent Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy, named for the Adelaide-born Bragg father and son who described the Bragg peak, was built to house Australia's first proton therapy facility. Adelaide research strengths include haematological malignancy (Centre for Cancer Biology), prostate and breast cancer biology, and gastrointestinal cancer, and the hospital enrols into Australasian cooperative-group trials (AGITG, TROG, ALLG).
