UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center

aka University of Virginia Cancer Center

Virginia's first NCI comprehensive centre (2021), a leader in melanoma peptide vaccines and therapeutic focused ultrasound.

NCI-designated in 1987, UVA became Virginia's first comprehensive cancer centre in 2021 and serves Charlottesville and the Appalachian south-west of the state. Craig Slingluff's decades of melanoma peptide vaccine trials made UVA a reference site for cancer vaccine immunology, complemented by Timothy Bullock's T-cell work. UVA is one of the world's leading centres for therapeutic focused ultrasound, with the Focused Ultrasound Foundation based in Charlottesville and trials in tumour ablation and immune priming. Director Thomas Loughran is the leading authority on large granular lymphocytic leukaemia, and the centre has a busy transplant and haematology service.
