Michel Attal
French haematologist whose trials established autologous stem-cell transplantation for myeloma in the 1990s and, in IFM 2009, showed that transplant still adds benefit in the era of lenalidomide, bortezomib and dexamethasone.
Overview
Michel Attal is a haematologist at the IUCT Oncopole in Toulouse and a leader of the Intergroupe Francophone du Myélome. His 1996 New England Journal of Medicine trial showed high-dose therapy with autologous transplantation improved survival over conventional chemotherapy in myeloma. He was first author of the 2017 New England Journal of Medicine report of IFM 2009, which found that adding early transplantation to RVD induction lengthened progression-free survival compared with RVD alone in transplant-eligible patients.
