Hitachi (particle therapy)
Hitachi builds synchrotron-based proton therapy systems for centres such as MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, St. Jude, Johns Hopkins and Hokkaido University, and carbon-ion facilities in Osaka and Taipei.
Overview
Hitachi entered particle therapy with the synchrotron at the University of Tsukuba and went on to supply the proton centres at MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Phoenix, St. Jude, Johns Hopkins at Sibley, Hokkaido University (where real-time tumour tracking with implanted markers was developed) and the National Cancer Centre Singapore, and the heavy-ion facilities in Osaka and at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. It absorbed Mitsubishi Electric's particle therapy business in 2018 and its systems use spot scanning from a synchrotron, so the beam is produced at the exact energy needed without a degrader. The business now sits within Hitachi High-Tech. OnCo links it to proton therapy machines and carbon-ion synchrotrons.
