St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

aka St. Jude

The only NCI comprehensive cancer centre devoted to children, where Total Therapy protocols made childhood leukaemia curable; families are never billed for care.

Founded by Danny Thomas in 1962 and NCI comprehensive since 2008, St. Jude treats children with cancer and catastrophic diseases without charging families for treatment, travel, housing or food. Donald Pinkel's Total Therapy protocols pioneered combination chemotherapy with CNS-directed therapy in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia; by St. Jude's own figures ALL survival rose from about 4% when the hospital opened to about 94% today. The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project with Washington University (2010) sequenced hundreds of paediatric tumours, and St. Jude Cloud shares the data; the hospital opened the first proton centre dedicated to children in 2015 and runs molecularly risk-adapted trials in medulloblastoma, neuroblastoma and retinoblastoma. St. Jude Global works to raise childhood cancer survival in low- and middle-income countries, and Julie Park chairs its Department of Oncology.
