Rabacfosadine (Tanovea) is an intravenous drip for dogs with lymphoma, conditionally approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2016 and fully approved in 2021. It is a medicine for dogs and is not used in people.
Tanovea (rabacfosadine for injection) was conditionally approved by the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine in December 2016 (as Tanovea-CA1) and received full approval on 15 July 2021 under NADA 141-545, sponsored by VetDC, Inc., for the treatment of lymphoma in dogs. The labelled regimen is 1 mg/kg by intravenous infusion every 21 days for up to five doses.
The effectiveness study randomised client-owned dogs with multicentric B-cell or T-cell lymphoma 3:1 to rabacfosadine or saline placebo. Median progression-free survival was 82 days against 21 days (P < 0.0001); in dogs with a complete or partial response it was 151 days. The commonest adverse reactions were diarrhoea, decreased appetite, vomiting, lethargy, weight loss and neutropenia. It is a veterinary medicine and has no human approval.
A small molecule that mimics the nucleoside guanine; the FDA summary states it preferentially targets rapidly dividing lymphoma cells and interferes with their DNA synthesis, reducing proliferation and causing cell death.
