Hassan Malik
Liver surgeon at Aintree who co-wrote the BSG cholangiocarcinoma guideline and is a co-author of the UK-wide CAPBIL studies of gallbladder cancer surgery; a past president of the British Association of Surgical Oncology.

Hassan Malik is a consultant hepatobiliary surgeon at Liverpool University Hospitals, clinical lead for digestive surgery at University Hospital Aintree and an associate professor at the University of Liverpool, where his staff page sits in the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology. He qualified in Glasgow in 1992, was appointed consultant in 2008 and runs a high-volume liver resection practice; he chaired the National Cancer Research Network upper GI group, is a past president of the British Association of Surgical Oncology and president-elect of the European Society of Surgical Oncology. He co-authored the 2023 British Society of Gastroenterology cholangiocarcinoma guideline and both 2026 CAPBIL papers from the UK HPB Research Collaborative Group, which pooled 516 gallbladder cancer operations from 24 UK centres including Aintree. This is the UK baseline for the incidental cancer pathway: a re-resection rate well above the Dutch registry's 24 percent, with the same selection caveat. The abstract leaves out the histology, referral and timing detail; the full paper holds it.
The adjuvant finding sits uneasily beside BILCAP, on which NHS adjuvant capecitabine rests; in a mostly gallbladder population the benefit is not visible. ACTICCA-1 and ARTEMIDE-Biliary01 are the trials that can settle it.
